Chasing Sam Vegas Mates Book 1 eBook Krystal Shannan
I don’t remember where I pick up this book, but I got hooked on the pacing and the author’s writing style. That being said, it ended abruptly, leaving you with questions that needed to be resolved.Sam wants to be in control of her life and finish school. She has ambitions, but her family has other plans for her. The twist in this book is that she’s a wolf, who is forced to find a mate. She has a clear goal, but the train ride to it is so short.
Her internal struggle with herself and her inner wolf is also too short. She meets Chase and has a connection so suddenly. Her mindset changes based on this one interaction at the airport. At first, I thought she already knew Chase, but at the same time she acts like she’s never met him. I guess she knew of his family, but had never met him? This was a little confusing. It might have been more believable if she had run away to school to get away from this connection when she was younger. That way, when she returns, she’s almost dreading running into him. This build up of tension from a past relationship might make the moment where Sam asks him to join the hunt less awkward.
When I started reading this book, I had a picture of Romeo and Juliet in my mind, though I wasn’t expecting a tragic ending. Even in Romeo and Juliet, you see the conclusion after their deaths. There is a final wrap up of the conflict between the families. This is what the book lacks; a glimpse of more tension building or diffusing between the families. This tension clearly spills over into book 2, from what I’ve read so far. So, book one needs to have that transition set at the end, allowing it to flow over the edge of that cliffhanger, instead of just cutting the reader off mid-way to their final destination. The way it is now doesn’t leave you satisfied or wanting more; it just ends.
Overall, the writing style and pacing was great. The interactions and dialogue between characters were realistic. There’s a lot of showing instead of telling, which kept me hooked. The hunt itself was entertaining with quick pacing. Loved the bear. I also liked the quick glimpse at Sam’s mother’s character, which is a great set up for book two. I just wish there had been even more conflict and tension, things going wrong for the main character, before and after the hunt. I would have loved to see more interaction between the families, especially at the end. There are so many questions that need to be resolved here before moving on to the intro of book 2.

Chasing Sam Vegas Mates Book 1 eBook Krystal Shannan Reviews
Chasing Sam is an entertaining series starter that introduces us to a headstrong family of sisters from a noble family and their journey to find their mates. Making their journey to finding mates even more difficult is their being wolf shifters. Not only does their heart choose who to love but so too does their wolf side, who actively carries on conversations with their human side throughout the story. Being from a noble family carries certain expectations of who they'll mate with which results in a story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet.
Samantha doesn't want the life her mother has as just arm candy, she wants to be a doctor and see the world. She's been hiding from fate but as it's her 25th birthday she can hide no longer. A ritual of the nobility, the mate hunt, has been planned by her parents where three men of their choosing will hunt her down and claim her as their own. The thought of being forced by an unknown man is repulsive to her, even more so after a chance encounter at the airport with military man Chase left her tingly and her wolf proclaiming him their mate. Sam will do everything she can to get the man of her choosing, even if it leads to both of their deaths. Samantha is a strong-willed woman but has the tendency to run when she gets upset. I felt at times that she was a girl trapped in a woman's body making rash decisions. She wants to be her own woman, which leads to numerous battles with her mother, but doesn't want to do anything to embarrass her family. I felt sympathetic for her that because of her sex her future isn't her own and I was rooting for Chase to rescue her every step of the way.
Chase Michaels comes from an average family, but the instant attraction he has towards her is anything but average. His bloodline proclaims him unsuitable to be her mate but their wolves disagree and slowly but surely Fate brings them together. Once Chase discovers that the only way he can claim her is by participating in the mate hunt, he enters a dangerous den where Sam's mother and the other candidates try to eliminate him before the hunt even starts. As a seasoned military man of numerous wars throughout history and the world he's more than capable of protecting himself and Samantha and finally claim her as his, and his wolf's, own. Chase is incredibly strong and loyal and he's proud of the fact that no man under his command has ever died. He has medical training and traveled to numerous countries that draws Sam to him even more. He knows that their families are complete opposites but no other woman has ever made him feel the way she has so he'll do nothing less than fight, and if need be, die for her.
This is a fast-paced story that early on shows the playful banter of their burgeoning relationship. The sexual tension oozes from them and it's frustrating that their relationship was interrupted by the mate hunt. The mate hunt is short-lived but heart-pounding and bloody with a surprising savior rescuing Samantha. Though the sexual tension is unrelenting it's not until the very end that that tension is finally resolved in a quickly concluded sexual interlude. Samantha's sisters are an entertaining bunch with very unique personalities. They too appear to have affections for inappropriate men that are just hinted at and will hopefully be addressed in future stories. We get a brief glimpse of Chase's brother Chris who is equally sexy and admits to an attraction to one of Samantha's sisters, so there's possibly more drama to come when it comes to love. Although I enjoyed many of the secondary characters it was Samantha's mother who I found absolutely awful! She was judgmental towards her daughters and got violent with Samantha on more than one occasion. She flew off the handle easily and purposely tried to eliminate Chase from the mate hunt. It's as if she was having mental issues and I believe she'll create more problems as the series progresses.
Ms. Shannan has created an intriguing paranormal read that has me excited to return to this world where HEAs are only reached through hard work. With a likable cast of characters there's many stories left to tell and I plan on reading them as Ms. Shannan's writing style is immensely appealing with a unique twist to the usual wolf shifters.
What to say about this wonderful book? When I read, I enjoy losing myself in the atmosphere, finding that I can "see" what is being played out before me on the page. This book and this talented author have that just ability.
I found that I needed to read more and more. This was a book that I could not put down. With each chapter, a little more peeled back and revealed. The characters grow and develop. To me they felt like real people; like people I could know, not some contrived character created to do amazing and astounding things as often seen in the popular literature. They experience true pain and hurt, but they also are capable of receiving and giving love, even for feeling hope. There is so much more beyond the surface of these characters.
Utterly beautiful, completely stunning, sexy sizzling shifters, spectacular, no matter what worlds I'll use I don't feel I can make this book justice. it is in time like these, when I have read a masterpiece like this, that I simply adored. I wish I had magic powers so I could simply convince everyone to read this hypnotic book.
Their love story is so beautiful. The way it started, the way it grows, the way it blossoms... this book deserves to be read and enjoyed. I would STRONGLY suggest this book to any of my friends. It's an incredible love story I cannot say enough good things about it and I cannot wait to read the next one!
I received a gift copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal, review.
