Background: I never write reviews but I am passionate about Gilmore Girls. I am an extremely dedicated fan & have watched/loved it since it premiered 16 years ago. I have seen every single episode at least 7 times. I know this show inside and out! :) Though this book is a fun read, I believe the cons unfortunately outweigh the pros here.Pros:
-Clearly the author put an extensive amount of work into this book. From gathering exclusive cast&crew interviews to doing tons of research, his efforts show!
-Overall format with breakdown of each episode to include best moments & quotes.
-There were many trivia tidbits that I, a very seasoned fan, never knew previously & it was exciting to discover new details!
Cons:
- Editing is an absolute mess. After all the author's hard work compiling great information, it's really a shame to see factual and dialogue errors & many, many other smaller errors! It's really sloppy and I found it to be a significant distraction. Especially the mis-quoting! (I compared my DVDs to the text in the book multiple times). This is a
big mistake with a TV show which so heavily depends on its dialogue.
- The author is highly subjective/opinionated and has many Gilmore biases. This companion provides behind the scenes tips & summarizes episodes. I appreciate that the author has opinions, as all of us Gilmore fans do. However, this book was not the vehicle for them and it felt inappropriate amongst so much factual text.
- The author, as a male, downplays the female experience and speaks condescendingly towards certain actions of female characters. I found this highly underwhelming at best and greivously patronizing at worst! Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that a man wrote this book and has enthusiasm for a show geared toward women. But this certain man definitely got it wrong and threw some "mansplaining" in this book as well. This is incredibly disappointing.
- Price point. When I bought this book, it was about $40 with tax. Given my experience, I think this book is worth more like $15-20.
Overall, I think Gilmore fans can pass on this one unless it randomly goes on deeply-discounted sale. The quotes & trivia are fun, but are not nearly enough to make up for what the book lacks, in my opinion. I wish there was a review like this before I bought my copy! Until then, counting down the days until the revival in November! :)

Love everything Gilmore Girls!
Bought this for my girlfriend who is a GG fanatic and she loved it! Lots of background information and behind the scenes stories about the actors and the characters that she's fallen in love with. She couldn't wait to open it and began reading it within minutes of receiving it. It's a thicker book than I expected so I definitely feel like I got my money's worth!
Love this behind the scenes version of my FAVORITE TV series. I am such a big fan. This author includes great pictures and fun stories about the birth of the series.
It's my fault I should have read other reviews, I was looking for some more in depth behind the scenes information instead I got a review of each season with sprinkled cast interviews.
If anyone is considering it, but not sure if it's worth it it totally is. There are just so many behind-the-scenes tidbits about everyone and everything. Edward Hermann apparently took Alexis under his wing at the beginning of the series and watched out of her her would tell the producers, etc., when she was being burnt out (she, a novice and shy, wasn't comfortable speaking up for that). If you watch the early episodes and notice how much Lorelai puts her arm around Rory, it's Lauren guiding Alexis to her mark. Kelly Bishop risked jinxing herself by telling the people at the audition what a great script it was. Keiko kept sneakers and a sweater from her Lane wardrobe; Todd Lowe swiped some Hep Alien swag. This book is a must-have for anyone that is or ever was a GG fan.
If your a fan of The Gilmore Girls, you are going to love this book! Great behind the scenes stories. A must for The Gilmore Girls Fan!
This was a really interesting look behind the scenes of Gilmore and having each episode discussed separately was a nice breakdown of the show.
